Abraham Lincoln

Interesting Facts
- Lincoln couldn't fight in the war because of his duties, so someone else had volunteered for him
- His future assassin stood close to him in his inauguration photo, first president to be photographed at his inauguration
- Right before his assassination, Lincoln had a dream of someone crying in the White House. He asked her, “Who died?” and she said, “The president.” Then he looked into a coffin and saw his own face. He had a premonition that he was going to be assassinated
- Lincoln has no descendants, only one of his four children lived into adulthood, and his last known descendant died in 1985
Jefferson Davis

Interesting Facts:
- First and only president of the confederate states of America
- Farmer, politician, and soldier who was born in Kentucky and raised in Mississippi
- He married Sarah Taylor.The daughter of Zachary Taylor, who was is colonel at the time and soon to be president. Sarah died about 3 months after the wedding due to a bad case of malaria.
- Had a second wife named Varina Howell, she was only 18. They eventually at 8 children, 2 girls and 4 boys. Only the women survived till adulthood.
Ulysses S. Grant

Interesting Facts:
- Ulysses learned he had cancer to the throat shortly after presidency. He started to write a book so he could pay off his debts and provide for his family. The book made about $450,000. He died soon after he finished the last page.
- In the Mexican war he fought for general Zachary Taylor
- He is sometimes known as the symbol of victory for the Union in the Civil War.
- After Shiloh, one of the bloodiest battles, President Lincoln said, “I can’t spare this man-- he fights.”
Robert E. Lee

- Led the Confederate General during the Civil War
- Graduated from West Point Military Academy with no demerits and perfect grades in artillery, infantry, and cavalry.
- Turned down an offer from President Lincoln to lead the Union in the Civil War
- Married the great-granddaughter of George Washington, Mary Custis. They had seven children together.

Frederick Douglas

- Born into slavery in 1818, lived with his maternal grandmother
- Wrote many autobiographies consisting of his experiences in slavery and his life after the Civil War
- Learned the alphabet and how to read from Sophia Auld, his master’s wife, and other white children
- Became the first African-American to be nominated for vice-president of the United States
Pierre Gustav Toutant (P. G. T.) Beauregard

- One of eight Confederate generals, best known for his victory at the First Battle of Bull Run and the capture of Fort Sumter
- first prominent general for the confederacy
- In April 1865 Beauregard and his his commander Joseph E. Johnston convinced Jefferson Davis and the rest of the cabinet members that the war needed to end.
- Beauregard was one of the few wealthy confederate veterans because of his role promoting the Louisiana Lottery
John Brown
