How the war ended, and the conditions faced
Lee surrendered in April 1865 to end the civil war at the McLean House village of Appomattox Court House. The confederates surrendered the army of Northern Virginia. There were other battles after this, but this was considered the official ending of the civil war. Before that date Lincoln made the emancipation proclamation, so if the confederates lost they would all come free states which happened.
